Supporting the Children Left Behind: The Guatemala Six Update

November 2009

Dear Friends,

I am pleased to share with you our latest update on the six children, affectionately called the Guatemala Six, whose foster care you are helping to fund. The children are thriving in their foster homes. We were delighted to receive another update on the children and to hear how they are growing and developing:

Updates on the children

YURY is doing much better. She is walking at last. She still cries with strange people, but now she smiles more. Yury still has malnutrition problems, but not as severe. Thanks to this program, she is improving her health and development.

LAURA doesn´t go to school yet; she will go next year. She is very shy, and is caring with her sister Yury, always taking care of her. She is changing and seems happier.

ANAYELY is in her second year of primary school. She should be in her third year, but due to her situation she started school late. She is a very nice girl, a little shy but always smil- ing. She likes to sing. Anayely is very healthy.

JACKELINE is attending her first year of school. She likes to draw. She is outgoing and always laughing. She is very healthy and is caring with the other children. She is doing very well at school!

EDDY is a shy child. He likes to play with cars and is able to use a computer, especially to play games. The girls at home love him, and he is very nice with them. He doesn´t have his front teeth and this contributes to his shyness; he now covers his mouth to talk. Eddy has problems with allergies and asthma.

The most exciting news is that little Fatima, one of the original "Guatemala Six", was able to return to her mother, who is now employed and better able to care for her daughter. This is bittersweet for Marta, Fatima's foster mother, but Betty is quick to remind us all that this is a positive outcome for Fatima and her family. On the other hand, we'll have more information to share in our next report about a newborn who has joined her sisters Yury and Laura in Ruth's foster home.
